Aluminum electrolytic production requires high temperature resistance of the cathode carbon block. The characteristics of resistance to molten salt erosion, good electrical conductivity, good thermal conductivity, high mechanical strength, good thermal shock resistance and strong resistance to sodium erosion are conducive to energy saving and longevity of aluminum electrolytic production. The types of cathode carbon blocks are based on the requirements of 5261 for the quality of the products, the raw materials selected and the process conditions. China basically divides the cathode carbon blocks into three categories: ordinary cathode carbon blocks, semi-graphite carbon blocks and graphite carbon blocks. Ordinary cathode carbon block uses anthracite calcined at 1250~1350℃ as its main raw material. Semi-graphite carbon blocks are divided into two types according to different production processes.

The difference between a semi-graphite carbon block and a graphite carbon block is the degree of orderly arrangement of the product lattice, that is, the degree of graphitization. The degree of graphitization can be expressed by the resistivity of the product. The lattice of the graphite carbon block is basically in an orderly arrangement, and the resistivity is less than 15μΩm; the graphitization degree of the semi-graphite carbon block is low or only partially graphitized, and the resistivity is 15 to 165345μΩm. The process is represented by the heat treatment temperature. The maximum heat treatment temperature of the semi-graphite carbon block is about 2000°C, and the graphitization temperature of the graphite carbon block is 2500-2800°C. Ordinary cathode carbon block, resistivity 50~60μΩm. The graphitized cathode is a conductive material used in the cathode of an aluminum electrolytic cell, and represents the development direction of the electrolytic aluminum industry. With the technological progress and development of the electrolytic aluminum industry, the electrolytic cell is developing in the direction of large capacity above 300KVA, and the requirements for cathode materials are higher. The main advantages of graphitized cathodes are to strengthen the current, improve the current efficiency, achieve the purpose of increasing production and energy saving, and to stabilize the operation of the electrolytic cell.
